To-ji Temple / Kyo-o-gokokuji Temple

To-ji TempleToji-temple is famous for its five-story pagoda and is the landmark of Kyoto. The temple was founded in 794 and handed over to KOBO DAISHI that is a title given to Buddhist monk, KUKAI who is a founder of SHINGON sect. In the hall, there are big Buddha statues. They are very impressive and well worth seeing.

-The 21st of each month is market day at To-ji temple. We call it Kobo-san. KOBO is a short word of KOBO TAISHI that is a title given to Buddhist monk, KUKAI who is a founder of SHINGON-SYU( one kind of Tantric Buddhism in Japan). You can buy antiques and second clothes. If you like Japanese antiques or KIMONO, it's a good place. Several antique sellers open a shop there and display their goods. You can also enjoy price negotiations with them. I'm sure it's interesting!
