Kyoto station is the terminal staion from the Kansai International airport, so it's very convenient for your arrival and departure. And it has a big bus terminal, and subway and other railways' stops, and you can go most of the major sightseeing places from there. In and around the Kyoto station, there are also a lot of souvenir shops and a department store, so you can enjoy shopping anytime.
Kyoto central area is the biggest downtown in Kyoto city. Especially along Shijo street, there are a lot of small and midium size stores, big department stores, and restaurants, so you can enjoy shopping and dinning. Along Karasuma street( north to south ) and Oike street( west to south), there are subway lines, so it also gives you to easy access to famous sight seeing places.
East Kyoto has many famous and beautiful sightseeing places within walking distances, such as Kiyomizu-dera temple, Yasaka-jinjya shrine, Nanzen-ji temple, and so on. So if you plan to go east Kyoto area for sightseeing, it might be better to select hotels around Kyoto east area.
North Kyoto is calm with plenty of nature. It's a little bit far from the Kyoto station, but some hotels provide pick-up or check-in service at the Kyoto station. The available transportaions are subway and buses. To go to some area in Kyoto, you need to transfer to another transportations. But it's a good location to relax after the sightseeing of the day.
Wset Kyoto has Arashiyama area and KInkaku-ji temple ( golden pavilion) that are one of the most famous sightseeing places in Kyoto. So if you plan to go east Kyoto area for sightseeing, it might be better to select hotels around Kyoto west area.
